Millfield Arts Centre

The Millfield Arts Centre, home of the Millfield Theatre and Millfield House, showcases a variety of performances throughout the year, including drama, musicals, dance, and comedy productions. Each year, the Millfield Arts Centre also produces an in-house professional pantomime. The modern facility with sophisticated sound and lighting systems is also home for various children's shows and education programmes.

History

Tracing its roots to the late 18th century, Millfield House once served as a private residence, the home to the Ambassador of the German Empire, and a school for London workhouse children. During the First World War, Millfield House was the home for Belgian refugees before it was converted into a hospital for sufferers of epilepsy in 1915. In 1971, the building was acquired and refurbished by the London Borough of Enfield.

Following extensive renovations by the Borough Council, Millfield House re-opened as an arts centre in 1979. The Millfield Arts Centre includes the Millfield Theatre and the stately Millfield House. The arts centre is owned, managed and funded by the London Borough of Enfield Council. First opened in 1988, the Millfield Theatre was renovated in 2009 to upgrade the venue's perfomance space and amenities. As part of the refurbishment, a new café bar was added. Additional performance space, a box office and a new toilet block were also added as part of the upgrades.

Venue Information

The Millfield Theatre provides seating for between 321 and 362 spectators in an air conditioned auditorium. Although seating in the auditorium is largely fixed in an end-on layout, the venue can be altered in a variety of stage layouts. The theatre is supported by an on-site box office and café bar for pre-show and interval refreshments. The café bar is located on the site of the former Weir Hall library, which was closed in 2008 and relocated to Fore Street in Edmonton.

In addition, Millfield House features rooms that are available for hire. Millford House also hosts a variety of workshops for community members. Educational classes and programming are marketed under the umbrella of Millfield Education. In addition to drama and theatre courses, classes are also offered in dance, art and other subjects for children and adults.

The Millfield Arts Centre is located in a park setting on Silver Street in the Edmonton area of North London.
